William Pownall was in his 70s when he recorded his memories of Uppermill as a child in the 1890s. His father was in business as a boot and shoe maker, first on High Street then on New Street, and William spent his childhood living in the heart of the village. His lively account is a tour of the village – its residents, shops, businesses and buildings as he remembered it as a boy and youth. The account, in his own words, is lavishly illustrated by a collection of photographs of the time and is supplemented by research by the Saddleworth Local History Group into the shops, business and characters he remembered in this vibrant, long-lost community.
