Written following his 90th birthday, this World War I veteran gives a personal account his early life as a trainee architect and his years of war service as an officer in France from 1915-18. Written in an unassuming, self-effacing style, he recounts his role as an officer at the battles of Somme and Paschedale, recalling the men he served with in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and life in the trenches. He hardly mentions his award of the Military Cross in 1917. He was wounded in 1918 and on recovery returned to civilian life to run a successful architect’s business in Oldham. As a Lieutenant Colonel he also served in Second World War. He was active in politics and served as a magistrate for many years but his lasting legacy is the Pots and Pans War Memorial which he designed in 1923.
