Documenting and publishing the history of Saddleworth is at the heart of the Society’s mission.

The Bulletin, a quarterly magazine aimed at making interesting material, recent discoveries and research readily available, was established in the early days of the Society. It has appeared continuously since 1971 containing articles on every aspect of the history of our district. An archive of all past editions is available on this website and a comprehensive index of past articles and subjects is under development. Current and recent editions are available to members and can be downloaded from this site. The archive is available to everyone.

The Saddleworth Festival of the Arts has provided an opportunity to publish a major historical work every four years. Most of these flagship publications are now out of print however many of the others are still available for purchase.

Some of the Society’s earliest publications are the heritage trails, walks around Saddleworth which document the history of individual areas and villages and draw attention to interesting buildings and surviving heritage. Some of these are now out of print and others in need of update, but they continue to be the best introduction to the history of each of the Saddleworth villages. Those still in print are may be ordered here and all are available for download.

Occasional publications include maps of local graveyards and the transcription and publication of monumental inscriptions is one of the Society’s current projects.
