Description
The oldest of the three churchyards of St Chad’s church is that to the east of the church. Burials here date back to the establishment of the church in the early thirteenth century but the oldest gravestones date from the late 1600s. A major survey of the churchyard, then very overgrown and impenetrable, took place in 2003-4 and a map of the gravestone positions produced and all the gravestones photographed. The book gives an historical account of the churchyard and lists all the monumental inscriptions. A fold out map shows the gravestone locations. Comprehensive indexes of names, occupations and places are included and notes from the burial registers added where these provide extra information. The existence of relevant wills is also noted.
