Description
Nine walks round Saddleworth’s villages, hamlets and hillsides. The walks are accompanied by comprehensive historical accounts of the places visited, what they were like in the past, the buildings, mills and the people behind them and extant survivals from the past. The Roman road through Saddleworth, the Castleshaw Roman Forts, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the remains of eighteenth century water mills, Saddleworth churches and chapels, textile mills, pubs and coaching houses, turnpike roads, shops, and listed buildings all feature. The walks are richly illustrated with sketches of points of interest and each is accompanied with an easily interpreted map.
