MALLALIEU 1588

The first Mallalieu, Thomas, is said to have come into Saddleworth with Capt Robert Radcliffe returning from fighting in Flanders. The story originating in the C18 has been much repeated. Recently DNA evidence in the Saddleworth Surnames Project is now giving it credence.

By 1881 there were 229 Mallalieus recorded in the British census with over 75% living in Saddleworth and the adjoining parishes.  See  http://www.archersoftware.co.uk/satlas01.htm

Emigration has taken the family to America, Australia, the Caribbean and elsewhere.

It is likely that all Mallalieus descend from the original Thomas.
