earliest times followed by a description of the
parish. As a knowledgeable local man
Butterworth was able to give a fascinating and
detailed picture of Saddleworth at that date.
The Society is now republishing Butterworth’s
History in a fine facsimile edition.IIn addition it includes an extensive introduction by Dr Robert Poole, who is an expert on the period, a contributor to the new Dictionary of National Biography and co-author of a book on Butterworth and his son Edwin.
The Butterworth histories of Ashton and Oldham have already been republished and now this edition fittingly complements them. It is an important addition to the bookshelves of local historians and lovers of Saddleworth.The book is now available for purchase.
