During 2003-05 a major investigation and renovation of the Old Churchyard at St Chad’s Church took place. Ancient gravestones were unearthed for the first time in nearly a century. There were 537 gravestones which were photographed and their inscriptions recorded.
St Chad’s was the mother church of Saddleworth and the graveyard, the last resting place of over thirty generations of Saddleworth people, was in use for more than 800 years.
The 537 gravestone inscriptions are now available in this new publication, which also contains an extensive introduction, illustrations, numerous informative footnotes, graveyard plan and a comprehensive index. In addition the inscriptions inside the church are included.
An essential source for Saddleworth family historians.
