Like many Saddleworth families Thomas and Martha Buckley of Dobcross sought a better life in America during the “Hungry Forties”. In their letters home from Cherry valley, near Leicester, Massachusetts they recount their experiences. For a poor family letters home were a luxury. The letters cover the thirty years 1845-75. They give an incite into the lives not only of the Buckley but of thousands of similar emigrants.
The originals are in Saddleworth museum and are transcribed in this book along with family photographs.
