Saddleworth lies to the west of the principal Pennine
watershed. Historically, a Township in the Agbrigg
Wapentake of the West Riding of Yorkshire; Saddleworth was,
however, a Chapelry within the parish of Rochdale until 1869
when it achieved parish status. Although still part of
the historic County of Yorkshire, Saddleworth is now part of
the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham.

The Saddleworth Historical Society aims to document the history
of Saddleworth, to promote an interest in the area's past,
and to facilitate research relating to Saddleworth history.
The Society's activities range from prehistory and
archaeology to landscape studies and architecture.
Members' interests include the textile industry, the
Industrial Revolution, transportation by way of packhorse
trails, turnpike roads, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and
railways, and family histories.
The Society arranges lectures and events throughout the year
and publishes a quarterly Bulletin, Local Interest
Trails, as well as books about Saddleworth. A large
archive of historical material is available to members for
research purposes. The Society's has a
growing international membership, many of whom are
descendants of emigrants from Saddleworth to America and
Australia.
